Why learn Italian today?

1–2 minutes

Why learn any language other than English? One may think that learning a new language isn’t that important unless needed for work. But we should see a new language as a key that can open an infinite number of doors.

Travelling abroad without knowing a single word in the local language for instance, can be scary and a bit overwhelming. The moment we look around at street signs and menus and realise we aren’t completely lost but we get the gist of what is in front of us: priceless! We feel as if we have the world in our hands… well, almost!

But we don’t need to travel to open doors to new exciting worlds thanks to our language skills. Even just reading a book in its original language can be such a huge achievement: we can appreciate the subtle nuances of those idioms and expressions which are so tricky to translate, conveying the exact same meaning. Not to mention cinema and tv: we all have a favourite Italian film that we might enjoy even more if we could watch it in its original version.

As a maestro of Italian cinema said:

“Un linguaggio diverso è una diversa visione della vita”

Federico Fellini
